Piedmont AHEC: Greensboro AHEC has a new name

The new name better reflects the geographic region that the organization has long served.

GREENSBORO — Greensboro Area Health Education Center has changed its name to be inclusive of the many communities within the eight-county region it serves. The new name is Piedmont Area Health Education Center, inspired by its location within the Piedmont area of North Carolina.

Although Piedmont AHEC’s office is in Greensboro, its service area includes Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Guilford, Montgomery, Orange, Randolph, and Rockingham counties.

Piedmont AHEC will continue to provide and support educational activities and services with a focus on primary care in rural communities and those with less access to resources, as it has done for close to 50 years.

“We are excited about the name change to Piedmont AHEC because it reflects our ongoing commitment to the eight-county region we serve,” said Terry Lynn, Interim Director. “We’ve been working to recruit, train, and retain the healthcare workforce in this region for nearly half a century, and our new name better identifies who we are and whom we serve.”

“We’re proud that our program serves all 100 of North Carolina’s counties, and it’s important that our regional AHECs’ identities reflect that reach,” added Hugh Tilson, Director of NC AHEC. “The Greensboro metro area is not the only community that Piedmont AHEC serves. The name Piedmont AHEC better reflects all the communities that this regional office has served since 1974.”

The new name will also better align with the naming conventions used by other regional health education centers in the NC AHEC Program. “We have adopted a statewide branding approach that ties all of our AHECs together,” said Tilson. “Adopting the name Piedmont AHEC while implementing the new branding approach demonstrates an intentionality to continue to serve the entire region as part of a coordinated effort to achieve our statewide vision.”
