Cone Health and N.C. A&T sign Memorandum of Understanding

The two organizations committed to further expanding opportunities for students pursuing healthcare careers.

GREENSBORO—Last week, Cone Health CEO Mary Jo Cagle, MD, and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University Chancellor Harold L. Martin, Sr., PhD, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), strengthening the already-existing partnership between the two organizations as they work to expand opportunities for students interested in pursuing healthcare careers.

Terry Lynn, Director of Medical Education at Cone Health and Interim Director of Piedmont AHEC, served on the planning committee for the March 2 event and co-facilitated a small group discussion about experiential learning opportunities with Dinitra White, PhD, Associate Professor, Biology, N.C. A&T, who co-directs Piedmont AHEC’s Pre-Professional Scholars Summer Experience (PPSSE).

Piedmont AHEC’s Patricia Parrish, MS, CHC, CDP Health Careers & Workforce Diversity, joined Dr. White and N.C. A&T’s Tanya Malloy, PhD, Associate Professor, Chemistry, in presenting an overview of clinical training programs and the Piedmont AHEC Scholars Program.

Participants also heard a series of lightning talks from Stephanie Teixeira-Poit, PhD, Associate Professor, Sociology, N.C. A&T; Monica Schmidt, MT(ASCP), MPH, PhD, Executive Director of Health Economics, Cone Health; Marc Cook, PhD, Associate Professor, Kinesiology, N.C. A&T; and Olu Jegede, MD, Vice President of Health Equity, Cone Health.

Quite a few Piedmont AHEC Scholars from N.C. A&T attended the event and the small group session, offering their insights into how to enhance experiential learning opportunities. The other two small group discussions focused on strategic workforce development and on research collaborations and community engagement.

Piedmont AHEC looks forward to the many educational opportunities that will grow out of the continued—and now strengthened—partnership between these two institutions.
